It’s been a while since I’ve been so excited to see a movie and I am what some might call a “movie fiend” – immune to the predictable Hollywood Buzz Machine. But I love me some Anne Hathaway and Jakie G so I was secretly hoping the movie would provide fuel for an [inspiration] post. Not quite, but it did give me some ammunition for good ol’ [L’Amour].
More than just “the sex”:
Basically it was a traditional Rom-Com (in terms of being formulaic), cross bred with a mix of “Knocked Up” i.e. dude humour (Jake’s film bro is a riot) and “Up in the Air” in terms of exposing the dirty side of the Pharmaceutical/Health Care industry.
There is plenty of Sexy Time in this movie, with Anne Hathaway boobie and Jakie G bum bum included (hot damn what a body). Their connection is what made the movie watchable and they both did a good job portraying flawed, yet lovable characters. Maggie (Anne) is a young artist suffering from Stage 1 Parkinson’s Disease and Jamie (Jake) is a rebellious charmer with daddy issues who sells for Pfizer.
I mean the way they looked at each other! You know when you see couples in public and you can almost make out the fluffy red hearts jumping out of their eye balls (like a cartoon) when they look at each other? It was like that. Good God, when will I be on the receiving end of one of those looks? Okay, self indulgent self-pity ends here. :)
Here is some colour commentary I shared with my poor best friend:
- “Who has a free-standing tub in the middle of their artsy loft? I mean, really?”
- A cheer when “Praise you like I should” by Fatboy Slim came on. That video is the epitome of a flash mob.
- “Guys are such pigs. Ewww.” (dirty docs and sales reps)
- “I can feel the sex. Like I’m in the room. Can you?”
- “That was a really awkward exchange, no?”
The ultimate message about love in this movie is:
- What are you willing to give up, in return for true love and acceptance?
- How does that compare to superficial victories like empty sex, fancy cars and promotions?
- Do you love yourself enough to let yourself be loved?
The Verdict: Worth a theatre visit, for a date night or with girl friends. Just know it doesn’t break new ground.
Next on my list: Blue Valentine. Two Amazingly talented thespians, that seek to expose the TRUTH in relationships. I’m all for a large helping of “the truth” and a serving of yummy Gosling.
For some reason, the movie reminds me of this song “On the Run” by K-OS. Enjoy:
